AT&T to provide unlocked iPhones for a Price

Apparently its not going to be so out of the question to buy a new and officially unlocked iphone in the US.

“Apple’s popular iPhone can be yours, no contract required. But there’s a catch — and a pricey one at that.

AT&T yesterday announced that it will offer the smartphone to people who want to use another carrier, starting at $599.

The iPhone 3G, scheduled for a July 11 release, will be available for $199 to new AT&T customers or existing customers eligible for an upgrade — under a two-year contract. The larger-capacity 16-gigabyte model will cost $299 under the same conditions.

For those looking to use another carrier, the 16-gigabyte version will cost $699.”

Ouch! $699 instead of $299 just to buy it without the AT&T contract!?

I think that it’s still unclear yet if it’s unlocked or not. At&t says that “no contract required” it doesn’t mention if it’s unlocked. I was reading some blogs- they say that if you pay $599( for 8GB iPhone) or $699( for 16 GB iPhone) you don’t need to sign a 2year contract;BUT it does not mean that it is unlocked. You will still have to use an AT&T sim card; the difference is that you don’t have to sign for a 2 year contract..

BUT i really hope that it’s unlocked

Come on, 600$ is a decent price. We even pay much more for other mobiles in Kuwait. 600$ = 158kd..This is much more cheeper than what you pay for SEVERAL nokia models, let alone 350kd for the 8800!

For what you’r getting with the iphone (gps-wifi-ipod-3g-8gb-…etc) This could be the cheapest phone u can get in q8 with those features!

Go do ur homework b4 posting!

fah good point i totally missed it.

randomq80ya agreed.

Fawaz I did my homework, I read the article. The article states that you’re going to pay $699 for a $299 mobile phone, and that sums it up. No matter how pricey other phones are and no matter what great amazing unavailable-elsewhere features this mobile has, it does not justify the big difference in price. It got nothing to do with how much I’m already paying for mobiles in Kuwait.
