As the topic says, I went yesterday with my wife to Safat Alghanim to search for the Acer Aspire One which Pure mentioned in the comments in my last post but guess what ?! SOLD OUT! even with a higher price its sold out in every alghanim branch. So i decided to end this issue by spending almost triple the Acer price and bought MSI Wind U90 for KD145 πŸ™‚

The best two models there were Asus EeePC 900 & MSI Wind U90 and their prices were KD155 & KD145 respectively, Esara7a i was confused between the two of them .. the Eee 900 was so sexy an SO TINY but when it comes to the specs the Wind wins.

Here are the MSI Wind U90 specs:

  • Got bluetooth (No bluetooth for the Asus).
  • 80GB HD (20 GB for the Asus).
  • 1GB RAM upgradable to 2GB.
  • Running Windows XP (Which is not a PLUS!) however, the Asus runs Linux.
  • 3 USB ports.
  • It cost less than the Asus by KD10.

Now i’ve ordered the Dell 1490 broadcom based card from eBay as Mark said in his post plus the 6-cells battery from Amazon these are the things needed to get my tiny machine to run OSX πŸ™‚

But my only question now:

Is there any difference in the Arabic keyboard layouts between the Mac and Windows? Do i need to re-arrange it after installing the OSX? ( i do need Arabic coz my MacBook Pro doesnt have Arabic layoutΒ  )

I think you missed the point of this whole netbook thing. It’s not about the specs as much as about the portability. The wind seems heavier than the asus. But with the asus you can add the missing functionality that you need like bluetooth (usb) and extra storage (external HD). But with the wind you can can’t remove the extra weight.

Of course, I might make the same decision when I buy myself one (my wife already thinks I have too many laptops) πŸ™‚

I would also say that u have missed the point of the netbooks.

I already have a reliable super fast MacBook (as u have as well) and thinking of buying the Asus eee. The point is to have a cheap ultra portable that I can use to surf and check my email & even watch movies with an extra long battery life without having to care if I lose the thing because it’s so cheap & if I lose it, I would simply get another one. I would not spend more than 80 KD for that. Also the Asus has a solid state drive which is actually a flash drive and not a hard drive, and that makes it better with dropping it or running with it. The thing is u need something with low specs that is cheap and small (asus weighs less than 2lbs), I don’t think u,ll need to run other programs on it, just the usual surfing and emails or movies. The cheap price and small size of the device would comepsate for the low specs.

If ur installing leapord os then u have the option for three Arabic layouts for the keyboard & one of them is the regular pc windows layout.

Ahmad & Meba walla i was thinking the same but, look for the diff.

    1- Built in BT.
    2- larger HD.
3- can run osx smoothly but asus can’t.
4- got original windows xp license.
5- Cheaper than the Asus by KD10.

bs ina larger than it by few inches .. 7araam akhaley hathaa o akheth wa7ed aghla mena with less specs. this was my conclusion.

  4. Meba says:

yeah ur right, I would have done the same thing with these prices, am just thinking of buying the Linux version (not a big windows fan) with a 16 solid state drive from amazon it’s 329 $, & I guess the linux will do fine (haven’t really tried it)

The whole point is not to spend too much when already have a desktop & a full size notebook. Other than that the wind is great, and u already paid for it, so mabrook & have fun with it πŸ™‚

  5. Mishary says:

Meba think about adding the cost of the shipping plus Aramex cost plus if there is some customs .. you will it up with nearly 100 – 110 KD.

  6. Meba says:

yeah thats about right, but this one is so light, it wights nothing, am trying to get a good deal for it in ebay, Hope I can get it shipped to kuwait with a total cost of 80 KD (that’ll be a challenge)

  8. Hayfa says:

There’s a difference between the Arabic layout between Mac & Windows, but in both systems you can choose the layout you’re used to.
So if you’re used to the Mac Arabic layout, you can install it and use it in Windows. And of course you can put the Windows Arabic layout on your Mac OS so you don’t get confused between the actual keyboard and the layout itself.
    Forgot to say, congratulations.

I’d like to comment on the linux thing , After I got my MSI Wind I decided to install Ubuntu (since I got sick of XP and vista isn’t an option for me ) , amazing OS indeed , only to discover that the network card is not fully supportable you have to do a couple of things for it to work properly . a month later I went back to xp was sick of my wireless not working.
