Taken from their website:

V-Net:

“Get high-speed Internet access on your laptop when you are on the move with VIVA 3.5G Data Card. It offers data transmission on laptop at speed up to 14.4 Mbps with V-Net (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) coverage.

Two packages for V-Net:

  • Pay as you go package, activated by default for all type of subscribers. This package is rated per Kbyte, 1 fils per Kbyte.
  • Unlimited package, this package is for 27KD/month.”

V-Link:

“When you plug a USB Modem into a laptop, it connects you to the web instantly. V-Link is a perfect option for Internet access on the go. Welcome the super slim and lightweight. You get freedom from wires and speedy Internet access on the move all in a tiny 30g V-Link Modem.

Just plug the V-Link into your USB slot and watch as everything auto-installs, it’s quick and easy, and with V-Net you can get broadband Internet access speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps.”

I don’t know what is the difference between these 2 services except that in the V-Net there is no modem mention and the speed is up to 14.4, and on the V-Link there is the modem but the speed is up to 7.2.

Click on the links to read more about both the V-Net & V-Link.

Thanks Khalid.

My friend bought his new E180 ego a few days ago from their airport branch. Here is what I know about it:

  • It’ll support the new 14.4 network speed.
  • It has 2 slots: 1 for the simcard and the other is for a mini SD card (up to 8 gb)
  • It costs KD45 if you already have a data line, and KD35 for the new subscribers.
  • It is much smaller and lighter than the one I’m using now (1st generation).
  • Better upload rate even on existing speeds.
  • It has a new revamped built-in software for both windows and Macs. Plug and play sort of thing. (Finally!)

Good offers are pouring in. I love it when there are competitions!

Taken from Dezeen:

“Saudi Arabia-based telecommunications company STC have designed a wireless internet router that can also be used to hold flowers.

STC (Saudi Telecom) was in need for a unique router design that would provoke a positive emotional response. Wireless internet, Voice over IP, land line telephone and wired DSL are all incorporated into this elegant device.”

If this is true then I hope it doesn’t get released in Kuwait coz a router/vase is so not what we’re looking for at the moment. I think it’s cool and important that they’re thinking different, but imo it’s more important to actually come up with cool ideas instead.

Check the comments here. Hilarious!

Thanks DVLz.

Since i got tons of emails asking me how can they make their BB read and write Arabic and even some send me their Blackberries to put the Arabic fonts into it, I’m deciding to dedicate a post to the way of installing Arabic fonts on your Blackberry to show you how simple it is.. it takes less than 30 seconds!

Here is how it works:

  • Connect your Blackberry with your laptop via USB cable.
  • Download some files from this site and open the folder.
  • You will find a lot of files in this folder search for a file called Arabic.bat and double click it.
  • A black window will pop up with a lot of text going on.. just sit back and relax.
  • Your Blackberry will reboot a couple of times do not panic. It’s normal procedure :)
  • After the black window goes away, discounect your Blackberry and thats it. Your blackberry now support Arabic :)

A lot of you guys have been waiting for Xperia A.K.A. X1 to get released in Kuwait and now the wait is over. My friend just got it and sent me the picture above. It’s available in silver in all of the Barak Center branches. It costs KD275.

Their phone # 1-833-777 ext. 123

Thanks Taymoor.

Just got some insider information that Zain will be introducing soon their new internet speed connection which doubles the current speed to 14.4 Mbps. It should give you an average download speed of 1800 kb/s which is more than double the speed of our current one, however it will be more expensive. They told me it will be in KD30’s range and the 7.2 Mbps will cost less but the speed will remain the same. I don’t have any idea if the 14.4 Mbps will be unlimited or limited in bandwidth.

Thanks Ali.

Just spotted VIVA branch in Al-Kout Mall which indicates that they will open so soon inshallah.

We went this time without Yousef. We used to go with him almost every year since 1998. He didn’t want to go because we were going early in the morning and returning the same day at night. He wanted to stay atleast for a night. I don’t know why He doesn’t enjoy the exhibition.

They’re going to release a new e-Go package tomorrow. It’s going to be a prepaid package, no fixed monthly fees and no subscriptions. the e-Go device (shown above) will be sold for KD 40 and then you can charge it by paying either through eezee cards or by going online and pay using your Knet or Credit card. You can choose to pay KD1.5 which equals either 500mb worth of bandwidth or 24 hours internet access.

The network connection speed is still 7.2mb for this new package.

I’m sure we’ve all seen Zain’s new backup ads by now with the old man and his old wife. It created quite a stir when they first aired during ramadan.

The ad basically used the old wife character to portray how she (the mobile) can be easily replaced by the old husband with another mobile incase of loss, damage..etc if he subscrib with Zain’s backup service. Most women (and some men) in my family found it offensive. My mother wanted to write a post on this blog and give Zain a piece of her mind. Other female members of my family were also offended and quite shocked by how degrading to women this whole ad campaign was. Other people had mixed reactions. Me and Mishary had our own little debate where one of us thought it is completely and utterly inappropriate to compare mobiles to women (wives) and the other thought they were funny. We even received emails asking us to say something about those ads. Here is an excerpt from an email we got:

“Zain should stop airing them immediately and apologize to all the people who felt offended by the Ads”

I also asked some of my friends and got different responses. Their responses:

  1. I LOVE it! I laugh each time I see them on tv.
  2. They’re hard to get.
  3. Sexist and offensive.
  4. and this has to be the best response and the most intriguing argument I got:

  5. The ads ruffle some insecure feathers. It plays on typical and old stereotypes. Our grandfathers used to think somewhat similarly about women; they’re replaceable. And this what annoyed the Kuwaiti females the most.. It would’ve been offensive if they hired a young couple to do the ad, but they didn’t, they made them old, and that is how (most) old Kuwaiti men used to think about women anyway.

ma3alaina.. We’ll let you decide for yourselves. Participate in the poll on the right sidebar to answer this question:

What do you think of the new Zain backup Ads?

If you still haven’t edited or renumbered your phonebook, like me, then go to Zain’s website and under the “quick links” box you should find “Zain renumbering solutions,” click on it and look up your mobile’s version. There is comprehensive list of almost every mobile out there. Find your mobile from the list, download it’s software, upload the software to your mobile, hit renumber.. and you’re done.

    Screenshots

A CD of the solutions will be available tomorrow, free of charge, at Zain branches.

Mishary, there is a blackberry link there as well ;)
