We were discussing the swine flu topic today and someone raised this question: Why does Kuwait have this high percentage of swine flu cases compared to neighboring countries?
A Doctor was present and he had this to say:
“Take the number of cases discovered in Kuwait and compare it to the cases discovered at country X, and then take the number of deaths caused by the swine flu in Kuwait and again in country X, you’d find the that Kuwait’s percentage is much smaller than the other country’s. This tells us that in Kuwait we have more “reported” cases than other countries because we are more able, financially, to test and discover those cases, whereas in other countries they don’t bother to test each sick individual for swine flu.
It costs too much to test for the swine flu. Actually it costs the hospital much less to treat you and provide the necessary medication than to just test you. The UK for example started treating patients who have the symptoms without testing them first (depends on the severity of their symptoms). But since we’re in Kuwait, every person with the swine flu symptoms get tested, and thats why we have a relatively a high number of cases discovered compared to other countries.
And to add something, the numbers will double soon, but that’s not because the outbreak just got worse or bigger (That’s what Kuwaitis like to say at diwaniyas), but the truth is, it’s because a new lab dedicated to swine flu tests just opened, And naturally this new lab will report more cases as the amounts of tests increase.”
So don’t freak out just yet!
ma agol ela allah yaster ;/
i think there needs to be an awareness campaign for the people. a big percentage has a lack of knowledge of prevention and how to contract the flu.
[…] The rest is here: Why so many swine flu cases in Kuwait? « SOME contrast […]
Thanks for this post, indeed his analysis is very logical.
Hopefully this outbreak will subside soon as predicted.

that was a bit reassuring 🙂 thxo
lol…this is quite funny and its a good news….;-)
+1 @ aaa
I still think its bad news the way things are going…and we kuwaities never take anything seriously..people still travel a lot and they still go to crowded places..life goes on? feeling suicidal perhaps!?
today’s AlWatan newspaper Dr. Hilal Alsayer says: Don’t PANIC! but there gonna be more death cases of swine flu in the future! 3AYAL SHAKU DON’T PANIC?!!
la I’M GONNA PANIC! ist’3frallah the idea of dying from a flu is sad ppl! we’re in 2009 right? I’m just making sure its not 1920’s!
The fear itself is nerve-wracking! I want everything to be the same again! 🙁 my mind is all-over the place! I wish I was 11yrs old again lol good times
Guys, swine flu does not kill a normal healthy person. It only hurts people who have health problems and a poor immune system. Wu ba3dain ib october a vaccine will be released to the world. Not sure when Kuwait will be getting them though.
We have it in the family now. I can tell you Kuwait (Mubarak Hospital) have stopped testing!
I have a big doubt of this testing lab! And the procedures in place are far from adequate, and the reason why we have low numbers is because MOH was ordered to keep it on the Down Low as to not to freak out the general population, I know of four people who have had Swine Flu and just got the meds and testing done at International Clinic without reporting it, and this I have seen. Or else they would drag the person to infectious diseases instead of leaving them at home.
Swine Flu is world wide its a Flu! its not a big deal unless you are an infant or have health problems… There is nothing much your country can do! Lest see how this will get worse, and it will even with all the wornings of the MOH is giving us about gatherings, and person to person contact.
1) Dewaniyas and Qbgat where hey you will kiss and hug most of your friends.
2) Mosques where you will be praying next to hundreds of complete strangers that might have the flu.
3) Eid 🙂 here is when if one person in the family will have it, then everyone will 🙂
If you think we are worse off then most other countries trust me you are wrong but we are a country that has a lot a lot of gathering. Dont blame your country for something they cant prevent.
I hope all will be well with all of you just take the necessary precautions and inshala all will be fine.

I can tell you now.
There has been one more death over the weekend.
It’s in EVERY school in Kuwait.
just walk down the corridor and you will hear sneezing, coughing, sniffing.. and no, it’s not normal cold, it’s just not the same.
Kids with temps of 40 degrees is NOT normal in seasonal flu.
Healthy people are now dying. Check the WHO website. just yesterday they released a statement saying just that.
well, I only can hope that God may save our ppl from this flu.
