I thought there is a rule about a minimum of 3 months till expiry for items to be still at shelves for sale? coz this item pictured had only 2 months till it expires and it’s still sitting on the shelves.

I just searched around in the internet and couldn’t find anything about it. Is there a rule about expiry dates in Kuwait?

The three months thing is something that the Co-Ops invented. Some kinds of food are usually safe to consume even three months after their expiary date… other kind of foods don’t really expire (such as pickles and other things) but I think Baladiya(?) requires them to put a specific period depending on the kind of food.

anyway, if you go to sultan centre u’ll even find expired food on sale!

There are a lot of food items that expire in a month from production date or a few days so don’t think such a rule would make sense since some items would never see the shelf 🙂

Actually mayo has a long shelf-life up to 1-2 years unopened. BUT the manufacturers always advise to consume within 2 months after opening & to keep refrigerated to preserve taste because scientifically it has vinegar & this would protect it from bacteria and may last longer.

Naheda, I thought since mayos on general had egg in then they’d expire pretty quickly compared to other kinds if foods

Mark, Duh :p obviously I wasn’t talking about eggs and bread and cheese or food with short shelf life span in general. I was talking about canned food and stuff like jams, mayos and the likes.. Stuff with relatively long shelf lives.

3azeez, lol we got the mayo from sultan center, but I didn’t want to mention it on the post since I’m not sure whether a 3 months rule existed it or not.

I think the three month rule with the co-ops is for when they’re buying from the supplier so they won’t accept any food with an expiry date less than three months from delivery.

But I don’t think it has anything to do with how long it stays on the shelves!

Many time I return stuff from TSC , coz I found out when I reach home that they r expired already ,, u have to becareful with TSC

    agree with nawnaw

  7. Musaed says:

With TSC its a minimum of 3 hours 😛

  8. 3azeez says:

@Yousef, that answers ur question… when food items are removed from Co-Ops three months before their expiry dates, the distributors usually take them to other places such as Sultan Centre (and others) and baqala…

I’m not sure but I think they should lower the price of something that will expire soon!

    love.
